Maryland's Pascual earns academic honor

Maryland gymnast Mandy Pascual, a 2001 graduate of Punahou from 'Aiea, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II Women's At-Large first team.

Pascual, who was a junior, earned a 3.942 grade point average in chemical engineering and improved on last year's all-district second-team selection.

Pascual was also an East Atlantic Gymnastics League first-team all-conference selection on uneven bars and a member of the EAGL All-Academic team all three years.

She earned Maryland/ICA Honor Roll all three years and was honored with the 2004 Maryland Academic Achievement Award for gymnastics.

She also earned the Iron Terp team award for dedication in the weight room at the team's awards banquet.

Women's Wrestling

• Missouri Valley (Marshall, Mo.) sophomore-to-be Stephany Lee (Moanalua '02) won gold at the University Women's World Championships on Saturday at Lodz, Poland.

Lee, coming off a third-place finish at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, won by fall over Poland's Agnieszka in the 72kg (158.5 pounds) division, helping the United States finish in fifth place.

Clarissa Chun (Roosevelt '99 of Kapolei) finished in fourth place in the 48 kg (105.5) division, losing 7-5 to Greece's Fani Psatha.

Softball

• Notre Dame de Namur University (Belmont, Calif.) second baseman Erika Miyahira (Punahou '01 of Honolulu), who was a junior, was named to the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete team.

Miyahira is a biology major.

• Missouri Valley College (Marshall, Mo.) catcher Cassie Chun-Ming (Kaiser '02 of Honolulu), who will be a junior, was named to the All-Heart of America Conference Softball first team.

Chun-Ming was second in the Heart of America Conference with a .359 average, with four home runs and 21 runs.

Senior second baseman Sheri Yoshino (McKinley '00 of Kane'ohe) was named to the second team.

Yoshino, a biology major, also was named to the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete team.

• Azusa Pacific (Calif.) utility player Rachel Yoshizu (Hawai'i Baptist '02 of Kane'ohe), who just completed her sophomore year, was named to the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete team.

Yoshizu is an applied health major.

• Hartnell (Salinas, Calif.) CC outfielder Christopher Balatico (Mililani '03), who was a freshman, was named to the All-Coast Conference first team, after hitting .405 with 23 RBIs, nine doubles and eight triples.

Catcher Dana Yamashita (Hilo '03), who will be a sophomore, was named to the second team and second baseman Dustin Nuibe (Mililani '03), who was a freshman, was an honorable mention selection.

• Adding to his list of growing accomplishments this season, All-America catcher Kurt Suzuki (Baldwin '01 of Wailuku) of Cal State Fullerton was named to the All-Region team Sunday after helping the Titans advance to the Super Regional.

Women's Tennis

• Long Beach State's Kelly Chan (Konawaena '00 of Kailua, Kona), who recently completed her senior year, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Women's At-Large first team.

Chan had a 3.91 GPA in marketing. She has been named to the Big West Spring All-Academic Team twice and is a seven-time member of the 49ers Academic All-Star List.

Women's Golf

• Nebraska's Merynn Ito ('Aiea '01), who will be a senior, was selected to the Big 12 All-Academic first team, after carrying a 3.567 grade point average as a news-editorial major.

It is Ito's second straight first-team selection.

Commitments

• Iolani graduate Shawn Agustin will attend Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., and will play football and baseball for the Division III Pirates.
