Kamehameha tops fund-raisers

Kamehameha Elementary School raised $55,750 in the recent Jump Rope for Heart fund-raising effort, the top total in the state and the second-highest in the nation.

Students at 190 schools in Hawai'i raised $750,000 for the American Heart Association.

The top individual jumper in Hawai'i was Kayla Nanbu of Ma'ema'e Elementary School, who raised $2,625.


Punahou wins moot court event

Punahou won the annual Loyola Law School/ Dr. Edison H. Miyawaki Moot Court Competition at Mid-Pacific Institute. Kelly Matayoshi of Punahou was named best oralist. She was teamed with Catherine Davis.

Sacred Hearts finished second in the four-school event.

Other participants were Jason Ellinwood and William Kovalchik of Mid-Pacific, Christopher Stiles and Amber Feliciano of Pearl City High School, and Aislinn Hernandez and Frances Cordero of Sacred Hearts Academy.

Held in a courtroom-like setting, the mock trial addresses a hypothetical case based on a real U.S. Supreme Court case.

Kapolei honors citizens patrol

The Second City Citizens Patrol received a 2004 Kapolei Outstanding Achievement Award for community service from the Campbell Estate. The volunteers conduct patrols in the community and at schools after dark; help with traffic, parking and security at school events; act as a liaison between police and the community; and hold public education meetings.

Other award recipients were Kapolei High teacher Joan Lewis (education category), Dr. Reid and Sue Elam (entrepreneurship), Henry Chang Wo (environment) and Michael Golojuch Sr. (lifetime achievement).


Whale photo winners named

A dramatic photograph of a breaching whale taken by Dale Walsh of Dallas, Ga., has received the "Best Overall Photo" prize in the Pacific Whale Foundation's 2004 Humpback Whale Photo Contest. The photo was snapped by Walsh from aboard the foundation's catamaran, Ocean Quest.

Paul and Kristie Felton of San Francisco won the "Best Amateur Adult Photo" prize with their photo of a breaching whale, snapped from aboard the Ocean Explorer out of Lahaina Harbor.


Castle teacher gets fellowship

Alyson Fink, a teacher at Castle High School, has been awarded a James Madison Fellowship by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation in Washington, D.C.

A total of 54 fellowships were awarded in 2004.

The fellowships support advanced study of American history.
