Shibuya, Victorino Jr. advance at Manoa Cup
Advertiser Staff
Former champions Randy Shibuya and Damien Victorino Jr. advanced yesterday in the 96th annual Manoa Cup at Oahu Country Club.
Guy Yamamoto, a two-time winner, and Brandan Kop, who has won this state amateur match play golf title four times, were not as fortunate.
Shannon Tanoue stopped Kop on the 17th hole, 2 and 1, to reach today's quarterfinals. He will meet former University of Hawai'i-Hilo player Hee Beom Kim, who edged 13-year-old Tadd Fujikawa by the same score.
Ryan Perez defeated Yamamoto, 5 and 4. Perez will play for UH-Manoa in the fall. He lost a playoff with Kurt Nino for the state high school championship last month.
Perez will play Doug Williams, who won yesterday's most one-sided match, 8 and 6, over Todd Rego.
Shibuya, who won the 2000 Cup, outlasted Ryan Masuda, 2 and 1. Shibuya plays Ronald Haranda, 53, in the quarterfinals. Haranda, a member at OCC, defeated Brandon Abreu, 4 and 2.
Victorino, the 1996 Manoa Cup champion, plays Lee Sakugawa today. Sakugawa beat Garret Hayashi, 2 and 1, while Victorino ousted 2003 state high school champion Troy Higashiyama, 4 and 2.
Quarterfinals begin this morning at 7.
