Bands give our hearts some soul

By Derek Paiva

Tonight's soul blast from the past includes The Chi-Lites. The '70s Soul Jam, a national tour, begins at 7 at the Blaisdell Center Arena.

My dream hosts for the '70s Soul Jam would be Johnny Brown and Ja'net DuBois. That's right, the actors who played portly building superintendent Bookman and whipsmart single mom Willona on "Good Times."

Why? Well, Jimmie "J.J." Walker has hosted this nationwide touring machine in years past (though not in Honolulu). And speaking of "Good Times," bet Janet "Penny" Jackson isn't too busy to turn down the gig.

Just imagine how poignant and true to her post "Damita Jo" CD career it would be when Ms. Jackson belted out the line, "Scratchin' and survivin'!" from the show's theme. Sweet!

But really, just the icing on the cake for this multi-act blast of sweet soul nostalgia's annual visit to the Blaisdell Arena.

Introducing the musicians involved and the one song they'd be foolish to avoid:

  • The Stylistics: "You Are Everything."
  • The Emotions: "Best of My Love," since "Boogie Wonderland" is nothing without Earth, Wind & Fire.
  • Harold Melvin's Blue Notes: "If You Don't Know Me By Now," even without Teddy Pendergrass.
  • The Chi-Lites: "Oh Girl."
  • Carl Carlton: "Everlasting Love" is fine, but "She's A Bad Mama Jama" is a soul brick house.
  • Eddie Holman: "Hey There Lonely Girl." Is there a choice?
  • Yvonne Elliman: "Hello Stranger." Shoo-bop, shoo-bop. My baby!
