KONISHIKI
Eager to see a really, really big star? Sumotori Konishiki (born Salevaa Atisanoe in Nanakuli) performs today in the annual Waikiki Ho'olaule'a of this year's Pan-Pacific Festival. The festival celebrates Japanese culture with festivities slated at various sites, including Ala Moana Center and the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Kalakaua Avenue will be closed to traffic, replaced by stages, food and craft booths. Also, Konishiki will ride in Sunday's Matsuri Parade with some of his Konishiki Kids Club keiki.

Rituals, festivities at king's roots

While some people will mark today's state holiday at the beach, out in the land of Kamehameha the Great, a Kamehameha Day parade and ho'olaule'a will be celebrated the old-fashioned way in Hawi, North Kohala. The king was born in Kokoiki, near Hawi, in late 1758.

The event opens with a ceremony at the original king's statue. There's an oral history of Kamehameha, hula, music, ho'okupu presentation and lei draping followed by a 9 a.m. floral parade with pa'u princesses from Hawi to Kamehameha Park, where a daylong ho'olaule'a will have exhibits, Hawaiian demonstrations, entertainment and food.
