Former champions Damien Victorino Jr. and Randy Shibuya won quarterfinal matches yesterday to advance in the 96th Manoa Cup at Oahu Country Club.

Victorino will play Shannon Tanoue, and Shibuya will meet Ryan Perez in today's 36-hole semifinals of the state amateur match play championship tournament. The morning round starts at 7 a.m.

Victorino, who won the Manoa Cup in 1996, ousted Lee Sakugawa, 3 and 2, yesterday at the hilly, windswept course in Nu'uanu Valley.

Shibuya, the 2000 Manoa Cup champion, eliminated Ron Haranda, 2 and 1.

Tanoue, the lowest seed of the quarterfinalists at No. 47, bounced Mike Kim, 3 and 2.

Perez, the 2004 state high school championship runner-up from Moanalua, defeated Doug Williams, 3 and 2.

Perez, who will attend the University of Hawai'i in the fall, is the youngest (18) and highest-seeded (4) player remaining from the match-play field of 64.

Perez is representative of the recent domination by youngsters in the oldest and most prestigious amateur golf tournament in Hawai'i.

Victorino, at 35, is the elder statesman of the final four. Shibuya, who ousted defending champion Kellen-Floyd Asao, is 29 and Tanoue is 25.
