Klaneski said yesterday he will have surgery on the partially torn anterior cruciate ligament and torn meniscus in his right knee suffered April 30 at Bossier-Shreveport (La).
Klaneski, who is on the long-term (four weeks) injured list, had been rehabbing the injury in hopes of avoiding surgery, but he suffered a setback at Tuesday's practice.
"I went out there and broke on it," he said. "We kind of knew the possibility of that happening."
Desmond Maul and Joshua Robinson have started the past four games at defensive specialist and will do so again tomorrow night when the Islanders (5-4) host the Central Valley Coyotes (1-8) at Blaisdell Arena. Kickoff for the arenafootball2 West Division game is set for 6:30.
Klaneski rejoined the team for practice last week and was hoping to return soon before the setback.
"I was aiming on trying to get back next week or in the next couple weeks, depending on how fast I could get back into playing shape," he said. "I was having a good practice until I tweaked it."
Klaneski said he'll undergo surgery in two weeks and the recovery time will be about six months.

Klaneski added putting off the surgery would do further damage to his knee and lead to more problems.
"I could have taken more time, but I don't want to be training, all this hard work, and have something happen when I get back," he said.
Klaneski, who missed the season opener March 27 with a hamstring injury, played in four consecutive games this season all in April. He finished with 18 solo and 12 assisted tackles.
"It's unfortunate more for him than us," Islanders head coach Cal Lee said of Klaneski's injury. "We have to move on. It's one of those things that happens in football."
Last season, Klaneski was the Islanders' Defensive Player of the Year after recording 63 solo and 40 assisted tackles.
I Coyotes corner: Fred Biletnikoff Jr. took over as Central Valley's head coach after Cree Morris stepped down earlier this week.
Biletnikoff's father was a receiver for the Oakland Raiders from 1965 to '78 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988.
Biletnikoff was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Coyotes prior to his promotion.
"He's a great guy," Lee said. "I've met him before and he brings a lot of enthusiasm to the team. Maybe they'll be fired up."
I Roster moves: The Islanders put fullback/linebacker Chaun-cey Ako on the 21-man roster this week and placed lineman Morrie Roe (calf) on short-term IR (two weeks). Also, fullback/linebacker Fabian Manumaleuna (ankle) and lineman Mose Tuia (knee) were transferred from short-term IR to long-term IR (four).
