There were 512 participants and 512 winners during the 13th annual Kane'ohe Elementary Invitational track meet, a goodwill event where no times are kept and everyone who finishes receives a medal or ribbon.
Schools from the Honolulu, Windward, Leeward and Central districts competed in the event for fifth- and sixth-graders.
Some of the meet objectives are to develop an appreciation for track and field, as well as goodwill, sportsmanship and school pride.
"Over the past 13 years, we have received many, many comments from principals ... They all have a firm belief that this meet helps them promote a healthy alternative to tobacco, alcohol and other substances and serves to reward students who are eligible academically and who maintain a desired level of behavior," said Mitchell Otani, meet organizer and principal at Kane'ohe Elementary.
