ANIMAL COMPANIONS
Consider adopting a feline during Love a Cat month

Hawaiian Humane Society

June is Love a Cat month, and all month long, the Hawaiian Humane Society is promoting the wonderful relationships between humans and felines.

The humane society's Cat House, perched amid blooming gardens, is purring with cats and kittens in all colors, types and sizes. It's the perfect time to choose a lifetime companion or two.

The Cat House's open-air rooms are surrounded by benches to allow you to interact with the cats and discover their personalities.

Don't judge them on looks alone — this is a lifelong relationship you're creating. If you're considering a double adoption, you will see which feline pairs have already forged relationships and play well with each other. And there's probably nothing more joyful than watching 30 or so kittens playing together in one room.

Adopting from the Hawaiian Humane Society is always a great value. For a $55 fee, your new feline companion is already spayed or neutered, has a microchip ID and first vaccinations, and goes home in a cat carrier. You also receive a certificate for a free initial exam from an O'ahu veterinarian.

To celebrate June as Love-A-Cat month, adopters also receive a coupon for a free flea product for cats (Revolution, Topspot, Frontline Plus or Advantage), redeemable at any O'ahu veterinary clinic. And you can take home another cat or kitten for no extra charge. The benefit of a two-cat household is that they can learn from each other, and keep each other company while you are away.

For the adoptive "parent," two cats also add up to twice the household fun.

Crazy cats

For more than 20 years, Crazy Shirts has been a humane society supporter, creating a signature T-shirt every June that raises funds for the society.

"The community loves these shirts," says Mark Hollander, CEO of Crazy Shirts. "These limited-edition shirts that promote cat adoptions really have become a local favorite and a collector's item."

A portion of T-shirt sales proceeds are donated to the society.

As a special bonus, shoppers at Crazy Shirts at Ala Moana and Pearlridge Center in June will each receive a coupon for a free feline microchip ID from the humane society with every purchase of an Adopt-A-Cat shirt.

"Cats bring so much comfort and joy to our lives," says Pamela Burns, humane society president and CEO. "Our goal is to place as many cats as possible in loving homes where they will have lifelong companions."

Sociable cats invited

If you have a cat that enjoys being around people and other pets, bring her to the society's annual Petwalk, at Magic Island on June 20, which happens to be Father's Day. Registration is at 7 a.m., and the two-mile walk starts at 8 a.m., followed by refreshments for animals and humans, a tail-wagging contest and pet-costume contest.

Pledge forms are available online at www.hawaiianhumane.org and at the shelter, Subway, KFC, Times Supermarket, and Border's Books and Music in Ward Centre.

Donations are tax-deductible and help support the humane society.

ADOPTABLES

Rocky

Tag no. 30040

He looks like a tough guy but Rocky is a lover, not a fighter. He is about 3 years old and likes playing with toys. A cat that enjoys talking, Rocky would make a wonderful lifelong feline companion now during Love-A-Cat month.

Shadow

Tag no. 633

Here's a playful dog that is perfect for an active family with no other dogs. Shadow is an attractive 4-year-old black Labrador mix waiting in Kennel 10 for you to visit. Ask for training tips and follow-up advice from the phone help line.

These particular animals already may have found homes. The Hawaiian Humane Society and McInerny Dog Park at 2700 Wai'alae Ave. are open noon to 8 p.m. weekdays; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends. The incoming-animals area always is open. If you've lost or found an animal, call the society immediately at 946-2187, ext. 285. See www.hawaiianhumane.org.
