Kahua to buy Damon cattle

Advertiser Staff

The Big Island's historic Kahua Ranch announced an agreement to buy most of the cattle owned by the Damon Estate's Kahuku Ranch.

Kahua — an 8,500-acre livestock ranch and tourist attraction in North Kohala — also will take over operations of Kahuku Ranch. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Damon Estate announced plans last week to close its ranch on the Big Island sometime soon after July 31. The transition comes as the trust prepares to wind up its affairs as required on the death of Samuel Mills Damon's last living grandchild, Joan Haig, who is in her 80s.

Kahua, which will manage 1,595 acres of Damon land, said it is considering hiring Kahuku Ranch employees.
