Three teams three-peat at Hui Wa'a canoe regatta

By Stanley Lee
Advertiser Staff Writer

With the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a regatta season just three weeks old, teams are still trying to find that winning combination.

But for Kane'ohe Canoe Club, Koa Kai and the Waikiki Beach Boys, their experiments led them to winning their third straight regatta titles in their respective divisions at yesterday's Lokahi Hoe 2004 at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

"We're working with different crews to make the teams stronger," said Koa Kai coach Joe Kim.

"You have to play a strategy game," explained Iwa Bush, whose Lokahi team won the women's sophomore race. "You place people in the right place to gain those points. It's a question of what's going to happen every week."

Kane'ohe Canoe Club rode its youth paddlers to victory again, earning 63 of its 75 points in the 18 youth races to win the AAA division.

"We're working hard every week. Our goal is to try to peak before states," said Kane'ohe coach Junior Parilla. "We just try to get better every week."

Kane'ohe's youth won eight of their races, including a 20-second victory in the 1-mile boys under-18 race. The club took second in the seven others as Kane'ohe, like all the other clubs, is still experimenting with different crew combinations.

"It's going to be like that for the next couple weeks," Parilla said of the experiments. "Second is good. There are a lot of good kids' programs out here."

Koa Kai won the AA division title with 49 points behind wins in the girls 14-and-under, men's sophomore, men's novice A and men's senior master's races.

Coach Joe Kim has been surprised at how well his teams have been doing so far. Koa Kai increased its size from 17 to 24 teams this year with more youth and women's teams. He said his club is still adjusting to the bigger team size, evident with a disqualification yesterday, and scratches and disqualifications last week.

"We kind of surprised ourselves at how well we did," Kim said. "We didn't expect to be at this level at this part of the season. We thought we would still be growing."

The Waikiki Beach Boys' women's senior team won for the third time this season as they too moved different crew members around.

"It took us a little while to jive because our coach is changing people around to see what people can do in what seat," said Meredith Takara, a member of the Beach Boys' senior women's team. "For example, I've never been (in the) five (seat) and I was there today."

Koa Kai stood neck-and-neck with the Waikiki Beach Boys after the first half-mile turn in the senior women's race before the connection was made. The Waikiki Beach Boys began to pull ahead, coming out of the 1-mile turn first and cruising to the win in 13:07.16, 30 seconds ahead of second place Lokahi.

That coupled with victories from the women's novice B and women's freshmen teams gave Waikiki Beach Boys the A division title with 26 points.

One of the closer races of the day was in the men's senior race, as Manu O Ke Kai edged out Koa Kai by less than four seconds, winning in 11:42.97.

"We beat them (Koa Kai) in the last four races so I think we were going that much harder so that we wouldn't lose," said Greg Wright. "We pulled out some sort of unhuman thing. It's just something from down deep."

He credited steersman Moku Sanborn who helped the team get out of the turns quickly.

"He had some really good turns that kind of surprised us," Wright said.

Sanborn said the quick turns came out of practices and the win was something where "everybody dug deep down and gave a little extra."

Added Wright: "We knew they (Koa Kai) were coming up for us and they really wanted to beat us. They switched their crews around. There was some stiff competition today."

OHCRA

The Kailua Canoe Club used its home-ocean advantage to score 100 points and win the King Kamehameha Regatta yesterday at Kailua Beach.

It was the second regatta of the season for the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA).

Kailua won 11 races, including five of the masters division races. It was the first time that an OHCRA club reached 100 points since Outrigger in 1997.

Lanikai won nine races and placed second with 80 points. Hui Lanakila was third with 50.

Leeward Kai and Keahiakahoe scored 15 points each to tie for top honors in the A division for smaller clubs.
