Wai'anae's Bartels beats Kaua'i's Kennelly

Wai'anae's Melanie Bartels defeated Kaua'i's Keala Kennelly to win the SG Magazine Queen of Surf contest Sunday at Pacific Beach, Calif.

The final day of the three-day competition took place in inconsistent waves of 1 to 3 feet.

Bartels received scores of 5.75 and 5.0 early in the heat, and never relinquished the lead. She received $3,500 for the victory.

"There weren't too many makeable waves," said Bartels, 23. "It was just luck of the draw."

The contest was part of the women's World Qualifying Series. The results did not count toward the World Championship Tour.
