Hawai'i swimmers, divers receive All-America honors

Advertiser Staff

Thirty-three high school All-America citations have been awarded to swimmers and divers from Hawai'i by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association.

Twenty-nine swimming awards were given out, including seven for relay teams. Four divers were also named All-Americans.

Iolani swimmer Mark Eckert, who owns three individual state meet records (including the 100-yard backstroke, which he set this year), received six individual honors and one relay honor for independent (private) schools. Punahou's Noa Sakamoto was a six-time honoree, including two relays. Maui's Chelsea Nagata had the most selections among public school girl swimmers with three.

Leading the way for the divers were Aleia Monden of St. Andrew's and Drew Wallace of Punahou, who set meet records at the HHSAA/Local Motion State Swimming and Diving Championships in February.

Monden was named to the independent schools girls team and Wallace to the independent schools boys team.

Punahou's Michael Ono also was selected to the independent schools boys diving team while Kaiser's Michael Doe was named to the public schools diving team.

Swimmers and divers received All-America status by meeting automatic standard times and scores set by the NISCA throughout the season.
