Suzuki earns third baseball accolade

 •  Last Samurai: QB Rose set for one more shot in Tokyo

Cal State Fullerton's Kurt Suzuki was named to his third All-America baseball team after the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association selected the junior catcher to its second team yesterday.

Suzuki, a 2001 graduate of Baldwin from Wailuku, is batting .437 with 101 hits, 16 home runs, and 86 RBIs, and has helped put the Titans in their second straight College World Series appearance.

He became the second Titan in as many years to amass 100 hits in a season and his 86 RBIs ties him with Phil Nevin for sixth on the single-season list.

Suzuki was named to the Louisville Slugger All-America first team, selected by the staff of Collegiate Baseball, and the Sports Weekly All-America second team.



More Baseball

• Hartnell (Salinas, Calif.) CC freshman outfielder Christopher Balatico (Mililani '03) was named to the All-Coast Conference first team, after hitting .405 with 23 RBIs, nine doubles and eight triples.

Freshman catcher Dana Yamashita (Hilo '03) was named to the second team and freshman second baseman Dustin Nuibe (Mililani '03) was an honorable mention selection.



Women's Water Polo

• UCLA sophomore center defender Katie Flanagan (Punahou '02 of Honolulu) was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic All-Conference team.

Flanagan earned a 3.18 grade point average.



Softball

• Notre Dame de Namur University (Belmont, Calif.) junior second baseman Erika Miyahira (Punahou '01 of Honolulu)was named to the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete team.

Miyahira is a biology major.

• Missouri Valley College (Marshall, Mo.) sophomore catcher Cassie Chun-Ming (Kaiser '02 of Honolulu) was named to the All-Heart of America Conference first team.

Chun-Ming was second in the Heart of America Conference with a .359 batting average. She hit four home runs and scored 21 runs.

Senior second baseman Sheri Yoshino (McKinley '00 of Kane'ohe) was named to the second team.

Yoshino, a biology major, also was named to the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete team.

• Azusa Pacific (Calif.) sophomore utility player Rachel Yoshizu (Hawai'i Baptist '02 of Kane'ohe) was named to the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete team.

Yoshizu is an applied health major.



Women's Tennis

• Long Beach State senior Kelly Chan (Konawaena '00 of Kailua, Kona) was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Women's At-Large first team.

Chan had a 3.91 GPA in marketing. She has been named to the Big West Spring All-Academic Team twice and is a seven-time member of the 49ers Academic All-Star List.



Women's Golf

• Nebraska junior Merynn Ito ('Aiea '01) was selected to the Big 12 All-Academic first team, after carrying a 3.567 grade point average as a news-editorial major.

It is Ito's second straight first-team selection.

• Trel Mangarin, a forward out of Hawai'i Prep, has signed with the 2004 Humboldt State men's soccer squad, head coach Andy Cumbo announced.

"We are extremely excited that Trel will be joining our men's soccer program," Cumbo said on the school's Web site. "He has done a tremendous job both creating and finishing scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. He will be looked upon to make an immediate impact here."

Mangarin was a Big Island Interscholastic Federation first-team selection as a senior.

I 2004 Iolani graduate Shawn Agustin will attend Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., and will play football and baseball for the Division III Pirates, according to his mother, Margaret Agustin.
