Applicants flood HPU athletic post

More than 100 people have applied for Hawai'i Pacific's vacant athletic director and men's basketball coaching position as of yesterday's deadline, the school announced.
Applications have been received from local, Mainland and international coaches and athletic administrators, the school said. The list also includes people from various collegiate and high school levels.
Telephone interviews begin today with leading candidates. A selection committee hopes to make a recommendation to HPU president Chatt Wright by July 12.
The vacancy was created when Russell Dung announced in May that he would resign as athletic director and men's basketball coach June 30.
Dung served as Tony Sellitto's top assistant from 1988 and helped HPU win the 1993 NAIA national championship, the state's only national basketball title at any collegiate level.
Dung, who compiled a 26-27 record in his two years as head basketball coach, said he made his decision for personal reasons.
In addition to the basketball title, HPU's women's volleyball team won two national NCAA Division II titles in 1998 and 2000, and the NAIA championship in 1990.
