Singer Melveen Leed is hospitalized in Los Angeles, in stable condition after a heart-related incident last Saturday, according to her daughter.
"I was performing on the (cruise ship) Pride of Aloha, and did a wonderful show, earning a standing ovation," Leed said from her hospital bed. "Later, I felt my heart beating fast, and I knew something was wrong."
Doctors diagnosed the problem as arrhythmia tachycardia. Her daughter, Ka'aikaula Naluai, said Leed has had a history of heart problems. Leed, affectionately known as Da Tita, still was undergoing cardiology tests but hoped to be released today or tomorrow to return home to continue her recuperation.
"I think it was all triggered by a virus," said Leed, who was weak but in good spirits, surrounded by family and close friends. "It was a wake-up call."
Cha Thompson of Tihati Productions in Honolulu is spearheading efforts to stage a benefit sometime this summer to raise funds for the medical bills. Details will be announced.
