Former 'Miz' kid now an 'Oklahoma' guy

The Local Angle: Jason Tam, now 21, is spending quality time with family before scooting off to do a Sacramento Music Circus musical, "Oklahoma," July 27-Aug. 1. He'll be playing an adult in the singing-dancing ensemble — his first Equity production in which he does so. You may remember Jason when he was a Punahou School youth, enacting the role of Gavroche in "Les Miserables," which he performed here and later on Broadway in New York. He recently finished his third year at New York University (Tisch School of the Arts), from which he'll graduate this December, but not before settling into another Music Circus musical, "Footloose," which runs Aug. 10-15. Frequent Isle visitor Mary Gutzi also is in "Footloose." ...

Tam's "Les Miz" co-star from yesteryear, Tiffany Shinn, a recent graduate of the University of Southern California, also is home this summer, working at Compadres Bar & Grill and teaching dance and choreography at her alma mater, Punahou. A decade ago, she was Young Cosette in "Les Miz." She journeys to London this fall. ...

Name-dropping: Robert Cazimero provides entertainment at tomorrow's Miss Hawai'i pageant at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom. K5 televises it live, from 7:30 p.m., with KHNL-8's Howard Dashefsky hosting. ...

Tani Lynn Fujimoto, a recent Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominee, has been signed by Maui-based Rip Tide Records. Her first solo album on the label, "Hold On," will be recorded shortly for release later this year, preceded by a single. Tani Lynn, 16, a Sacred Hearts Academy student, has composed a number of originals set for the disc. "Writing is the way I deal with feelings," said Tani. "I find the inspiration for my songs in everyday experiences." Rip Tide, headed by Shane Dudoit and Karey Oura, launched the recording career of Hoku winner Raiatea Helm. ...

Whee, the people: Pat Sajak, in town for tonight's launch of "The Honeymooners: The Lost Episodes" with co-star Joe Moore at the Hawai'i Theatre, had a solo lunch last week at Keo's in Waikiki. ...

Hana hou: If you missed Lee Cataluna's hit comedy "Folks You Meet in Longs," better plan to get tickets to Kumu Kahua's revival, July 1-Aug. 1 at Kumu's downtown theater. The original cast, directed by Keith Kashiwada, returns to re-create the madcap activities of folks who make Longs a part of their days, including Daryl Bonilla, Dawn Gohara, Wil Kahele, Maka, Pamela Staats, Janice Terukina, Pukaua Ah Nee, Denise H. Colon and Chance Gusukuma. Tickets ($5 to $16) are on sale at the box office, 536-4441. ...

The popular radio show "Music Matters" (Thursdays on KHVH, with Mike Buck and Steve Sanders of Sanders Piano), is on a brief hiatus until June 24. Local musical illuminati have included Mihana Souza, Matt Catingub, Noel Okimoto, Honolulu Jazz Quartet, Carole Kai and Dr. Jorge Camara. Dixie Grill is in the midst of its very popular Crabfest, running until the end of the month, but when Gov. Linda Lingle was in for dinner Monday night with a large party, she opted for a slab of BBQ ribs instead. ...

Datebook: Hanks Cafe Honolulu will launch a new Sunday evening format — jazz — starting this weekend. The Stewart Cunningham Trio (Cunningham on piano, horns and vocals; Geneva Cook, vocals; and Jon Wolf, stand-up bass) will perform. "I'm enthused like I haven't been for a while," says club owner Hank Taufaasau. ...

"Moonlight Mele on the Lawn," from 6 p.m. June 24 at Bishop Museum, will celebrate the music of the Territory of Hawai'i, with "Territorial Airwaves" host Harry B. Soria Jr. emceeing. Performers include Na Palapalai, Kimo Alama Keaulana & Lei Hulu and Kealoha Kalama & Halau Hula O Pohai Kealoha. Tickets are $15 ($5 for ages 4-12). ...
