Callers report 155 illegal dump sites to city hotline

A city hotline and anti-illegal dumping advertising campaign are paying off big for O'ahu's environment.

Illegal dumping

Illegal dumping can be reported to the city's Environmental Concern Line, 692-5656.

People calling the hotline have reported 155 cases of illegal dumping since the city launched a public education effort in April, Mayor Jeremy Harris said.

"The aura of frustration and apathy regarding this issue seems to be lifting," Harris said.

The city has cleaned up 130 of the reported sites, and work is being done on the remaining 25.

A telephone survey at the end of April found that 62 percent of people called were familiar with the campaign, which has included ads on television, radio and in print, stressing that illegal dumping should not be tolerated, officials said.

Many of those surveyed supported increased fines and penalties for illegal dumping, officials said.
