The UH Board of Regents

The Board of Regents manages, controls and oversees the operation of the University of Hawai'i. The board consists of 12 members who are appointed by the governor and approved by the state Senate to staggered four-year terms. They serve as volunteers. Two seats are now vacant. Two more regents will end their terms at the end of this month. The regents are:
Patricia Y. Lee, regent chairwoman, of Honolulu, is a partner in the law firm of Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel. She holds a bachelor's degree and a law degree from UH-Manoa; a master's degree from Columbia University; and a doctorate from Northwestern University. She is active in numerous civic and professional organizations. Appointed by former Gov. Ben Cayetano. Term ends 2005.
Kitty Lagareta, of Honolulu, regent vice chairwoman, is chairwoman and chief executive officer of the public relations firm Communications Pacific. She was named 1999 Businesswoman of the Year by Pacific Business News. She was appointed by Gov. Linda Lingle, for whom she has served as a confidante and key campaigner. She also served on the Election Review Task Force. Term ends 2007.
Byron Bender, of Honolulu, is a UH-Manoa professor emeritus of linguistics. He holds a bachelor's degree from Goshen College and a master's and doctorate from Indiana University. He serves on the Hawai'i Public Employees' Health Fund Board. Appointed by Lingle. Term ends 2007.
Trent Kakuda, of Honolulu, is a student in the William S. Richardson School of Law at UH-Manoa. He received his bachelor's degree from UH. He is active in the Student Bar Association and the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program Alumni Association. Appointed by Lingle. Term ends 2005.
Charles Kawakami, of Lihu'e, Kaua'i, is president of Big Save Inc. and serves as chairman of the Hawai'i Food Industry Association. He holds an associate's degree from El Camino College and a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California. His community activities include work with the Wilcox Hospital Foundation and the Red Cross. Appointed by Cayetano. Term ends June 30.
Walter Nunokawa, of Honolulu, is a professor emeritus of psychology at UH-Manoa. He is director and co-founder of Hawai'i Clinical Research Center and active in the Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center Advisory Board and the Council on Mental Health and Substance Abuse. Appointed by Cayetano. Term ends June 30.
Alvin A. Tanaka, of Honolulu, is president of Pacific Transfer LLC. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree from UH-Manoa. He is a board member of Hawai'i Stevedores and serves on the board of directors of the Aloha Council, Boy Scouts of America. Appointed by Lingle. Term ends 2007.
Myron Yamasato, of Kamuela, on the Big Island, is vice president of finance for Waikoloa Land Co. He holds a bachelor's degree from UH-Manoa. He is also involved with the Hawai'i Economic Development Co. Appointed by Cayetano. Term ends 2006.
James J.C. Haynes, of Maui, is president of Maui Petroleum Inc., vice president of Hawai'i Petroleum, and president of Minit Stop Stores on Maui and Hawai'i. He was a Seabury Hall trustee for 25 years. Appointed by Lingle. Term ends 2006.
