55 Honu triathletes qualify for Ironman

There were 55 Ironman slots awarded after the inaugural Honu Half-Ironman Triathlon held Sunday on the Kohala Coast on the Big Island.

Allister Knox of Kihei, with a time of 2 hours, 7 minutes and 45 seconds in the men's division, and Tanya Bettis of Kailua, with a time of 2:18:24 in the women's division, led 55 qualifiers for the Ironman.

Registration for the 2005 Honu Half-Ironman, scheduled for June 5, starts next month.

This year's field was limited to Hawai'i residents, but the 2005 race will be open to international competitors as well, offering 35 Big Island, 20 state of Hawai'i, and 30 international qualifying slots.
