Lambert, Kiraly win second title in a row

Punahou graduate Mike Lambert teamed with beach volleyball veteran Karch Kiraly to win his second straight AVP Tour title last weekend.

Lambert and Kiraly, seeded second, defeated No. 3 seeds Sean Rosenthal and Larry Witt, 21-18, 14-21, 15-8, Sunday in the final of the $125,000 San Diego Open.

Lambert and Kiraly split the winning share of $14,500.

Baseball

Suzuki earns fourth All-American honor

Cal State Fullerton junior catcher Kurt Suzuki was named to the CollegeBaseballInsider.com All-American first team, his fourth All-American honor this season.

Suzuki, a 2001 graduate of Baldwin from Wailuku, is batting .437 with 101 hits, 16 home runs, and 86 RBIs, and has helped lift the Titans to their second straight College World Series appearance.

Fullerton (42-21) opens the World Series against South Carolina (50-15), Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Hawai'i time. The game will be televised live on ESPN.

Suzuki was named to the Louisville Slugger All-America first team, selected by the staff of Collegiate Baseball, and the Sports Weekly All-America and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association second teams.

He was the highest player with Hawai'i ties drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft after he was picked in the second round (67th overall) by the Oakland Athletics earlier this month.

Ex-'Bow Fuata waived by New York Jets

Former University of Hawai'i offensive lineman Lui Fuata was among four players waived by the New York Jets yesterday.

Fuata, who is 6 feet 2 and 313 pounds, signed with the Jets on July 18, 2003, and was placed on injury waivers the next day. He spent the 2003 season on the Jets' reserved/injured list while rehabilitating from a knee injury he suffered as a UH senior.
