Charges filed in carjacking

Authorities yesterday charged 40-year-old Kese Togia in connection with a Wednesday night carjacking in Waimalu.

Togia, who has no permanent address, was charged with second-degree robbery. Police said he stole a Ford sport-utility vehicle from a 22-year-old man and later crashed it into a garage at 98-895 Ka'ahele St. in Newtown.

Togia was being held in lieu of $35,000 bail.

According to police, Togia got into the SUV from an unlocked passenger-side door while the driver was stopped at Moanalua Road and Ka'ahele Street at about 9 p.m.

He ordered the motorist to drive onto the freeway and struck him when the driver refused, police said.

The driver jumped out of the vehicle and Togia drove off, police said.

A short time later, the vehicle plowed into a residential garage.

Togia was arrested by police nearby.

Killed moped rider identified

The medical examiner's office today identified a moped rider killed in a hit-and-run collision on Nimitz Highway and Richards Street Tuesday as Grayson Gray, 31, of Waikiki.

Gray was traveling toward Waikiki on Nimitz at about 12:20 a.m. when his blue moped collided with a Dodge van making an illegal left turn.

Witnesses told police that the van was speeding and turning against a red light. The van sped off without helping the injured man.

A CrimeStoppers tip led police to a Mililani Mauka home on Wednesday.

A 29-year-old man with a Waikiki address was arrested and booked shortly before 4 p.m. at the Wahiawa police station on suspicion of failure to render aid and first-degree negligent homicide.

The suspect was later released pending further investigation. The van, however, was impounded, and police today obtained a warrant to inspect the damage on the vehicle.
