Cruise line's Hawai'i crew gets a break

NCL America is canceling two events on its Pride of Aloha ship, crewed mostly by new hires from Hawai'i, to "give the crew a well-deserved rest," the cruise line said.

The events canceled are a travel- agent cruise out of San Francisco this weekend as well as a July 2 "party cruise" out of Honolulu "to add to the crew's opportunity to recharge before the start of the regular service on Hawai'i on July 4," the company said.

NCL's Pride of Aloha is Norwegian Cruise Line's first U.S.-flag ship, and unlike most large cruise liners, must be crewed by U.S. workers.

"NCL America's crew has been working around the clock to assist in the effort to introduce this entirely new U.S.-flag product," a company statement said. "The crew has been through a very intense dry dock, which was completed on June 7. During the dry dock, the ship was converted from bow to stern to Pride of Aloha with the able assistance of our crew members. Before beginning operations, this crew completed an intense training schedule and rigorous certification process."

Once the ship arrives in Hawai'i, the crew's schedule will return to normal with a fixed itinerary every week, according to NCL America.

"The company is very grateful for everything the crew has done to assist its efforts in successfully launching NCL America's U.S. Flagged operations," NCL said. "They have done an outstanding job, and we are very proud of them."
