E-mail scam being targeted

The Better Business Bureau of Hawaii and the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs have joined a national campaign to educate consumers about the dangers of "phishing."

Phishing is an e-mail scam in which con artists fish for consumers' personal financial information, such as credit card and Social Security numbers, by luring them to a Web site that looks like one from a legitimate company.

Other partners in the consumer education campaign include Visa USA, the Federal Trade Commission and Treasury Department. For more information on phishing go to www.bbb.org/phishing, www.visa.com/phishing or www.consumer.gov/idtheft.
