Shipman misses cut for Athens Olympics

Advertiser Staff

Phyllis Shipman will have to wait another four years to become the oldest American woman in the Olympics.

Shipman, who lives in Sunset Beach, did not advance to the final eight at yesterday's U.S. Archery Olympic Team Trials in Mason, Ohio. The 60-year-old former Mililani Uka principal is ranked 10th among American women. She has been a resident at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., since January of last year.

Shipman advanced to the final 16 women after Tuesday's elimination round. That number was cut in half over the past two days of 15 round-robin matches.

Top-ranked Jennifer Nichols, 20, leads the women's competition by almost 200 points going into the final two days.

Shipman was an All-American archer at the University of Pennsylvania in 1964 and '65. After retiring as principal, she took up the sport again after a 30-year absence.
