Hawaiian Airlines Pops Series

8 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays

Blaisdell Concert Hall

Season tickets: $154-$427

792-2000

A trip to the Grammys last February, when the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra was nominated for an award, made pops conductor Matt Catingub some connections that have resulted in several signings for the 2004-05 Hawaiian Airlines Pops Series season this fall.

Dianne Reeves and Arturo Sandoval — the former won her third Grammy, the latter performed with Justin Timberlake — are among the coming season's guest artists, thanks to their roles in the February Grammy show. Sandoval kicks off the new season with a pair of concerts Sept. 10 and 11; Reeves makes her first Hawai'i appearance April 8 and 9.

"We encountered some immensely talented artists that we wanted to bring to Hawai'i for their first shows with the pops," said Catingub.

The season also includes composer Burt Bacharach, who will bring his stable of hit songs, and such local favorites as Kalapana, Yvonne Elliman, Keali'i Reichel, the Brothers Cazimero and Na Leo Pilimehana.

All performances will be at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

The season:

  • Sept. 10, 11 — Arturo Sandoval, Grammy-winning jazz trumpeter.
  • Oct. 1, 2 — Kalapana and Yvonne Elliman; the group is marking its 30th anniversary; Elliman is known for her hits from "Jesus Christ, Superstar" and "Saturday Night Fever."
  • Oct. 29, 30 — "Tribute to the Seventies," a stroll down memory lane.
  • Nov. 19, 20 — Burt Bacharach, composer of a string of hits, including "Walk on By," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," "Alfie," "Promises, Promises," "Close to You," "That's What Friends Are For" and more.
  • Dec. 10, 11 — "Christmas Pops," with the Brothers Cazimero and Na Leo, veteran Na Hoku Hanohano winners.
  • April 8, 9 — Dianne Reeves, jazzdom's replenishing empress.
  • May 27, 28 — Keali'i Reichel, the multiple Na Hoku winner.
