NEIGHBOR ISLAND

Company wins concessions bid

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The Waimea-based Kikiaola Land Co. was the winning bidder for the state Parks Division contract to operate the Koke'e Lodge concessions for 2 1/2 years, starting July 1.

The operation includes the lodge restaurant, a gift shop and renting out 12 rustic cabin units within Koke'e State Park.

State Parks property manager Jim Springer said the length of the lease was designed to conclude at the end of 2006, the same time the state's more than 100 recreational cabin leases expire. A master plan is being prepared to decide the future of the state park concessions and cabins.

Kikiaola president Linda Faye Collins said the firm plans no immediate changes in the operation. The restaurant is now open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, and most of its trade comes from tour groups visiting the park and the Waimea Canyon and Kalalau Valley lookouts.

WINDWARD

Trash found near marsh site

A site inspection has revealed some 30 to 40 dump-truck loads of trash and debris on land owned by the state at Kawai Nui Marsh.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Windward Ahupua'a Alliance conducted the tour Friday in preparation for removing the material by the end of summer, said Shannon Wood, with the alliance.

Wood said the trash wasn't the typical stuff people dump from their homes. Much of the trash looks like it comes from construction projects and businesses. For instance there is a huge pile of discarded carpets that could have filled 60 homes or an office building, she said.

DLNR estimated it would take $250,000 to $400,000 to clean the area, but the alliance will work with Goodfellow Brothers, Ameron Hawaii, the city and the state to clear the land at no cost to the state, Wood said.
