Fullerton's Suzuki honored again

Cal State Fullerton junior catcher Kurt Suzuki has been named to his fifth All-America team after Baseball America selected him to its first team.
Suzuki, a 2001 graduate of Baldwin from Wailuku, was batting .437 with 101 hits, 16 home runs, and 86 RBIs, entering the College World Series.
Suzuki earlier was named to the Louisville Slugger and CollegeBaseballInsider.com All-America first teams, and Sports Weekly All-America and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association second teams.
CROSS COUNTRY
BYUH's Smith earns academic honor: Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's cross country runner Chelsea Smith has been named to the Daktronics District VIII Women's Track and Field/Cross Country All-Academic Team by the College Sports Information Directors Association.
The team comprises athletes from both sports from the NCAA II, NCAA III, and the NAIA.
Smith, a sophomore from Mead, Wash., carries a 3.86 grade point average as an exercise and sport science major.
Last fall, she won the NCAA II Cross Country National Championship by 25 seconds and was named West Region Runner of the Year. She was also a finalist for the Honda Award as the top female athlete in Division II.
The Daktronics teams are nominated by and voted on by sports information directors from NCAA and NAIA schools.

Hawai'i fighters lose in Las Vegas: San Diego's Ken Shamrock knocked out Wai'anae's Kimo Leopoldo at 1:26 of the first round of an Ultimate Fighting match last night in front of 10,000 fans at Las Vegas.
In another match, Matt Hughes of Illinois beat Hilo's Renato Verissimo by unanimous decision.
