Man arraigned in Mayor Wright shooting case

Advertiser Staff

A 35-year-old man was arraigned today at District Court on charges of first-degree hindering of prosecution in connection with Thursday's shooting at Mayor Wright Homes. Wade K. Martin is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail.

A police report filed at court says Martin slammed and locked the front door of apartment 33-M at 1211 Pua Lane as police officers approached the third-floor unit at 4 p.m. looking for fugitive Gordon Morse.

Martin was also one of three men seen by police climbing out of a rear window to the unit onto a ledge.

Martin returned to the unit while Morse, 32, and 19-year-old Manuel Kalaluhi climbed down to a second-story ledge.

Police said Morse shot at them. Police officers then returned fire, killing Morse and wounding Kalaluhi. Police officer Ermie Barroga Jr. was wounded.

Barroga was released from The Queen's Medical Center over the weekend. Kalaluhi remains at Queen's, where he is recovering from gunshot wounds to his left hand, shoulder, side of the head and abdomen, according to his grandmother Lillian Kalaluhi.

Martin was arrested in unit 33-M with Laura Tavares, 33. Tavares was also booked on first-degree hindering prosecution but was released pending further investigation.

Kalaluhi, who was arrested Wednesday at Green and Ernest streets at 2 p.m. on suspicion of auto theft, was arrested for first-degree hindering prosecution.

Although the medical examiner's office and police have not released the identity of the man killed Friday, Patricia Morse said it was her son, Gordon, and that funeral services will be held July 3 at 10 a.m. at Wai'anae Protestant Church.
