Woman killed in car crash

A 26-year-old woman was killed and two men injured yesterday in a single-car crash on the Big Island.

Police identified the woman as Sabrina Kapua of Pa'auilo. Kapua was the backseat passenger in the sedan, driven by a 28-year-old man, that flipped over about 700 feet north of the 22-mile marker on Highway 190 in Pu'uanahuli in North Kona, said Maj. Elroy Osorio. Police were notified of the crash at 9:37 a.m.

The driver and another man, 24, were treated for injuries at North Hawai'i Community Hospital and released, according to Kona police.

Kapua's death is the Big Island's 22th traffic fatality of the year compared to 14 on the same date in 2003.

Blasting cap leads to arrest

A man was arrested yesterday at Honolulu International Airport after trying to bring a blasting cap aboard a flight to the Mainland, a state official said.

The cap that could be used as part of a training grenade was detected in the man's carryon luggage by scanning equipment before he boarded ATA Flight 754 to Los Angeles, Department of Transportation spokesman Scott Ishikawa said.

Airport officials were also suspicious of the man because he had bought a one-way ticket with cash, Ishikawa said.

The man was taken to the federal detention center, while the blasting cap was turned over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, he said.
