Liberal talk hits Isle radio

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

Fans of conservative talk radio long have had programs on the air in Hawai'i, including local pundit Rick Hamada and syndicated host Rush Limbaugh on KHVH (830 on the dial).

Franken
Limbaugh also is heard on KAOI-AM (1110 on Maui) and KPUA-AM (670 on the Big Island).

Now left-liberal views are also buzzing on the local airwaves.

Air America Radio programs — including unabashedly frank Bush critic and comedian Al Franken's "The O'Franken Factor" — are aired on KUMU-AM (1500 on the dial in Honolulu), KAOI-AM and KQNG-AM (570 on Kaua'i). Franken's program is heard from 6 to 9 a.m. Mondays through Fridays and again from 5 to 8 p.m. weekdays on KUMU. On Maui and Kaua'i, he's heard from 6 to 8 p.m. weekdays.

Franken is irreverent. On a recent show, he ran an extended parody of a hushed radio broadcast from President Ronald Reagan's funeral.

Another liberal talk program, "The Randi Rhodes Show," airs from 8 to 11 p.m. weekdays only on KUMU.

Maui-based Visionary Related Entertainment, which owns the stations carrying Air America programming here, started broadcasting both of those liberal talk shows earlier this month. Selected Air America programs also are heard on weekends.
