The Advertiser's 12 awards included investigative reporting, which recognized the paper's special report on elderly residents who suffered from abuse or neglect entitled: "Suffering in Silence: Hawai'i's Elderly Victims."

Judges also honored the Advertiser for long and short feature writing, feature column writing, government reporting, breaking news reporting, feature photography and illustration. The paper also won two awards each in sports reporting and online news reporting.

Judges honored the Star-Bulletin's series "Ice Storm: Epidemic of the Islands," from September 2003 that examined issues surrounding the state's long-fought battle against crystal meth.

The Star-Bulletin won 10 awards overall, including honors for business reporting, spot news reporting, feature page and news page design, sports and news photography, editorial cartoon, news column writing and informational graphic.

The Maui News took the only other award among daily newspapers for general news and enterprise reporting.

KITV was the big winner among broadcasters with six awards including the prize for public service for its piece, "Pacific Adventures: Pohnpei."

The ABC affiliate also won for government reporting, general news-enterprise reporting, feature reporting, videography and special news program.
