Kailua wins third straight by taking regatta

 •  The love of family steers 37th Father's Day Regatta

Despite the tough competition, Kailua Canoe Club still managed to win another O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association regatta yesterday.

Paddlers dig in at the start of the men's sophomore race during the Father's Day Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. Kailua Canoe Club took the AA division title with 77 points to win.

Kailua took the AA division title with 77 points to win the Father's Day Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. Of the 37 races, 24 were decided by less than five seconds.

"Today was just a battle all day long," said Kailua coach Jimmy Bruhn. "Lanikai, Hui Lanakila, Hui Nalu all came up and Outrigger was there, too. It was a battle. We were exchanging points throughout the day."

In three weeks of OHCRA competition, Kailua has won all three regattas, including the last two outright. Kailua shared the first title of the season with Hui Lanakila.

Kailua won just five events yesterday, but its crews managed to score points in 17 of the 21 adult races after trailing Lanikai 34-29 after the 16 youth races.

"Our strategy is to put in our best (crew), get enough points (to qualify) for states. If you come out on top, that's fine," Bruhn said. "The competition is so hard and everybody is good."

Kailua managed to pull away from a three-way battle for first with Hui Lanakila Canoe Club and Lanikai Canoe Club at the end of the regatta by winning the 40 mixed and 55 mixed events. Kailua also won the freshmen men, boys 12 and girls 15 races.

Hui Lanakila, which finished second with 69 points, won 10 races, including the senior women in 12:58.21.

"We had a good, comfortable leg and it feels like our crew does really well upwind," said winning team member Katie Slocumb. "We have strong women and that was really toward our advantage in the race that had several upwind legs."

Hui Lanakila was the first team out of the 1-mile turn in the 1ð-mile race with Kailua and Outrigger closely following. With the wind at its back going toward the 1 "-mile turn, Hui Lanakila slowly began to pull away and stayed strong in the upwind leg toward the finish.

"They had a substantial lead where they just had to stay steady," coach Raven Aipa said. "I tell the steersman that at certain points, you have to dictate the race, pick it up, slow down or what-not."

Slocumb said yesterday's wind conditions were similar to the Ala Wai Canal, where the club trains. While she credited the win to her team's ability to paddle upwind, Aipa said it was the team chemistry between crew members Jessie Eames, Gail Grabowsky, Michelle Arnold, Seraphina Eames, Deborah Rosenblum and Slocumb that led them to victory.

"Our strong point is not the paddling but the camaraderie among the women," Aipa said. "That keeps everybody tight and they feed off one another. If you get positive within the program, then it makes it easier (to) win the race and then they feel better and paddle better."

Making it through the upwind also helped Lanikai win the senior men's race. Lanikai, Outrigger and Hui Lanakila went into the 1-mile turn one after the other. Lanikai then held off Outrigger to win in 10:53.95, a five-second victory in the 1 1/2-mile race.

"We just put it on in that second half-mile and then held it the last quarter (mile)," Lanikai's Kai Bartlett said.

"If you got a lead at the last turn, and even if it's by a boat or three seats, you only got a quarter-mile left, you know you got it in you because you're in shape for it and you got the adrenaline because you know you're in the lead and want to keep it," Bartlett said. "Anyone can come from second and win but it's a lot harder (to catch up). You have to work harder.

"It's such a short race and with all the competition, you're always going to expect something close."

Joining Bartlett on the winning crew were Kaai Bruhn, Kekoa Bruhn, David Daniels, John Foti and George Leslie.

Keahiakahoe took the A division title for smaller clubs with 22 points, winning the mixed 12 and boys 14 races.
