Waipi'o baseball team wins state title

The Waipi'o baseball team finished 5-0 in round-robin play to win the Little League Minors (ages 9-10) division state title at Lynch Field.

The six-team tournament started Wednesday and ended yesterday.

The other teams in the tournament were Kainalu (3-2), Makakilo (3-2), Kihei, Maui (2-3), Halawa (1-4) and Hamakua, Big Island (1-4).

Waipi'o beat Hamakua, 9-1, yesterday to finish off its perfect run.

Waipi'o's Nicolas Ogasawara (two innings), Ryan Reyes (three innings) and Kanoa Lenson (one inning) combined on a one-hitter.

Christan Donahue and Reid Akau both batted 3 for 3, and Gage Miller and D.J. Ebert went 2 for 2.

There is no national tournament for the Minors division.


MEETING

Hannemann will be at QB Club today

Honolulu mayoral candidate Mufi Hannemann and University of Hawai'i defensive line coach Vantz Singletary will speak at today's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Hannemann is the founder of the annual girls basketball Jamboree that was held at Moanalua High School this year. The showcase raises money for gender equity.

Also scheduled to speak today are Tim Busch, commissioner of the U.S. Soccer Federation's Veterans Cup; KHON weekend sports anchor Wailele Sallas; and Rainbow Wahine volleyball player Julianna Sanders.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program to follow at noon at the Pagoda Ballroom.
