Suspected bank robber banned

Advertiser Staff

Hours of homework paid off for Honolulu police with the arrest last night of a suspected serial bank robber in Kalihi.

The 37-year-old man, who has no permament local address, was arrested at 8:10 p.m. at North School and Dement streets by Windward O'ahu crime-reduction unit officers, on suspicion of robbing Central Pacific Bank's Mo'ili'ili branch last Monday.

The man is also a suspect in three other bank robberies since May 26, including Hawaii National Bank's Kailua branch yesterday. The robbery at 345 Hahani St. was reported at 10:40 a.m. Police believe he is the "frizzy-haired" bandit who also robbed American Savings Bank's Kalihi branch on May 26 and the Kane'ohe branch of City Bank on June 1.

The man, who has 43 prior convictions dating back to 1988, was identified as a possible suspect through profiling, brainstorming and photo-study sessions, said Lt. Ray Quon of HPD's Robbery Detail. Police were looking for him even before yesterday's holdup, said Quon.

Police believe the same man was standing in line yesterday at American Savings Bank's McCully branch at 10:05 a.m. but left the bank when he noticed employees looking at him.
