THE LEFT LANE
Chinatown salon wins an honor

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Honolulu's J Salon, in Chinatown, was named a "Salon of Distinction" in the June issue of Salon Today magazine.

The interior-design contest divides salons according to revenue categories. In the one for annual revenues up to $249,999, J Salon won, along with Elements Salon in Vernon, N.J. There was a considerable difference in the amount spent to create the winning ambiance. While Elements spent $1.4 million to beautify its 4,500 square feet, J Salon's bill for creating its 2,234-square-foot urban modern environment was $40,050 ... and a lot of elbow grease on the part of owners Gary Casupang and Joe Randazzo.

Flirty Jessica bares her soul

"People call me a dumb blonde, and to me, that's funny. I am ditzy, and I have been since I was a young girl flirting with boys. I always played into it because it's fun. That's me showing my imperfections that people can relate to, so they know I'm not perfect."

'Dodgeball' beans 'Terminal'

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks couldn't have seen this coming. The two Hollywood giants were nailed by "Dodgeball" at the box office this weekend. The Ben Stiller comedy scored $30 million in its opening weekend, topping Spielberg and Hanks' "Terminal" for the top spot. "Terminal" raked in $18.7 million, according to Exhibitor Relations estimates. "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" fell two spots from the previous weekend's top spot to third place with $17.4 million. "Shrek 2" placed fourth with $13.6 million, earning a total of $378.3 million in the five weeks since its release — replacing "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" for sixth place in the all-time box-office charts.
