SHOW BIZ
Special treatment for 'Greatest Albums'

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

Great expectations: Phil Arnone, KGMB-9 producer-director, is in the midst of planning a September TV special, "50 Greatest Hawai'i Albums of All Time," based on Honolulu magazine's rundown of top discs. In case you missed it, Keola and Kapono Beamer's "Honolulu City Lights" was No. 1. The special will look at some of the artists of the top albums — and perhaps shed light on little-known factoids through interviews. ...

Hawai'i's Jasmine Trias, the No. 3 "American Idol," stopped by to enjoy the Society of Seven Las Vegas recently and wound up on stage singing for the delighted audience. Her link to the group is William Daquioag, her voice teacher, who is an SOS member. Jaz's mom and dad, Nora and Rudy Trias, also were at the show — one of the rare relaxing moments the singer has had before starting up on the "Pop- Tarts Presents American Idol 3 Tour" this summer. ...

Wheeling along: Pat Sajak, the "Wheel of Fortune" host, was a credible Art Carney look-alike in his portrayal of Ed Norton in "The Honeymooners: The Lost Episodes," in that Manoa Valley Theatre fund-raiser last weekend at the Hawai'i Theatre. His Army buddy Joe Moore (the KHON-2 anchor), aided by a few extra pounds and some body padding, was jovially rotund to embody the spirit of Jackie Gleason as Ralph Kramden. While overlong, the play (a montage of sketches from Gleason's vintage TV show) had ample sight gags and charming body language, and — for delighted audience members — it was an opportunity to see the pair of TV icons having fun in the name of charity. ...

When promoter Tom Moffatt told longtime radio buddy Ron Jacobs that Moffatt was staging The Who Aug. 3 at the Blaisdell Arena, Jacobs asked Moffatt if he remembered the first time the Brits played in Hawai'i. Initially, Moffatt's response was, "We never did." Turns out he did — when Moffatt, Jacobs and another former K-POI Poi Boy, Tom Rounds, were partners in a presenting/production company called Arena Associates. They staged The Who with Herman's Hermits on Sept. 6, 1967, in the then-HIC (Honolulu International Center) Arena (now Blaisdell). Jacobs recalled their first Mainland venture, "The Magic Circus," at the Hollywood Palladium in the summer of 1969, when The Who was going to do a "rock opera." At the time, The Who was a distant second, or third, to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, but they had drawing power — including "a loud, boozy chick who was trying to crash the stage door," Jacobs remembered, claiming to be a somebody. Much later, he found out it was Janis Joplin. ...

Name-dropping: Makana, the local musician, is winding up a Mainland tour today with Jason Mraz and Raul Midon. Makana gives a Honolulu performance from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hard Rock Cafe, then hits the road again, heading for Japan, China, Europe and additional Mainland cities in July. ...

Cha Thompson alerted KSSK's Posse when the family's restored 1988 black Silverado was stolen last week (it was originally driven by the late Eli Thompson and maintained by brother Afatia Thompson of the group Reign). Michael W. Perry and Larry Price broadcast the car theft, and 24 hours later the vehicle was found at Sandy Beach, sans wheels, speakers and door handles, but clearly "deposited" for retrieval. The cops fingerprinted the stolen car, so the thief may be located. Cha Thompson, who is a police commissioner, was told by fellow commissioner Carol Takahashi to go the Posse route. "When the car was found, I told Mike and Larry I'd make my famous Hawaiian stew for those who helped with the tip," said Thompson. ...

Terry Bradshaw, Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Famer quarterback and Fox-TV studio analyst, dined with his family at least three times at Imari Restaurant at the Hilton Waikoloa Village recently. The four-time Super Bowl winner was enjoying a getaway on the Kohala Coast. ...

Pageantry: Jason Kina is staging this year's Universal Show Queen Pageant, a remarkable array of female impersonators, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Renaissance Ilikai Hotel's Pacific Ballroom. Judges include Keali'i Reichel, Pamela Young, Miss Hawaii USA 2005 Jennifer Fairbank, Eric Eugene Chandler and Tara Chanel. Tickets: Diamond Head Video at 735-6066. ...

Before the Miss Hawai'i pageant, judges assembled at the Wai'oli Tea Room to get to know each other. ...
