Injured infant's parents arrested

HILO, Hawai'i — Kona police have arrested the parents of a 6-week-old baby girl who was brought to Kona Community Hospital with broken ribs. The baby was taken to Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children in Hono-lulu, where she was listed in critical condition yesterday

Police said the child was taken to the Kona Community Hospital emergency room at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday because she was having difficulty breathing. Further investigation revealed the infant had multiple injuries, including rib fractures and lacerations to her liver, Acting Lt. Llewellyn Fukui said.

The child was taken into protective custody by police, who opened an investigation.

Both adult parents of the infant were arrested at the hospital and later released pending further investigation, police said.

Crash victim identified

Police have identified a 26-year-old woman who was killed Sunday in a single-car crash on the Big Island.

Police identified her as Sabrina Kapua of Pa'auilo. Kapua was the backseat passenger in the sedan, driven by a 28-year-old man, that flipped over about 700 feet north of the 22-mile marker on Highway 190 in Pu'uanahuli in North Kona, said Maj. Elroy Osorio.

The driver and another man, 24, were treated at North Hawai'i Community Hospital and released, Kona police said.

Kapua's death is the Big Island's 22nd traffic fatality of the year, compared with 14 on the same date in 2003.

Library won't open till August

The Liliha Public Library, which has been closed since Jan. 5 for roof repairs and renovation, will remain closed until at least August, two months longer than expected, according to the Hawai'i State Public Library System.

The closure is longer than expected because of wet weather, the concrete workers' strike and unanticipated renovation problems, the state said.

While the Liliha library and its bookdrop are closed, patrons are invited to use the Hawai'i State Library on Punchbowl Street and Kalihi-Palama Public Library.
