UH seeking BYU for football game in '06

By Stanley Lee

University of Hawai'i football fans could be seeing blue in the near future.

UH athletic director Herman Frazier contacted Brigham Young athletic director Val Hale last week to explore the possibility of a meeting in football.

Hale said the decision to play the Warriors will rest on the input of BYU head coach Gary Crowton.

"The decision is mainly up to him," Hale said. "If he doesn't want to do it, I am not going to push him."

Hale has been out of town, and has yet to discuss the situation with Crowton. No other details in regard to the proposed game have been finalized.

The Hawai'i schedule is set for this season and 2005, meaning the Cougars could play the Warriors as soon as 2006.

Old rivals, the teams last met in 2002 in Provo, Utah, when BYU defeated Hawai'i, 35-32.

The previous year, the Cougars came into Aloha Stadium ranked in the top 10 and undefeated, only to see the Warriors blow by them, 72-45, the highest offensive output by a UH football team.

"We played a lot of great games in the past and we'll see if we can continue with it in the future," Hale said.

The teams first met in 1930, and played each other annually from 1978 through 1998, when both were members of the Western Athletic Conference.
