UH women's water polo honored for academics

The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team was awarded the American Water Polo Coaches Association Team Honor for a cumulative team GPA of 3.09.

Six Rainbow Wahine were also individually honored as either Superior (3.41 to 3.70) or Excellent (3.20 to 3.41).

Hawai'i placed nine student-athletes on the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic teams.

Those athletes are: Colleen Schiman (3.61), Tracy Andersen (3.58), Shannon Carroll (3.55), Danielle Mulford (3.49), Malia Tarayao (3.29), Makana Whitford (3.25), Brittany Dames (3.11), Audrey Harrer (3.06) and Amber Lum (4.00).


Summer League starts tomorrow

University of Hawai'i players Julian Sensley and Jeff Blackett are among several Warriors competing in the NCAA Summer Basketball League that starts tomorrow.

Joining them are Vaidotas Peciukas, Bobby Nash and UH recruit, Matt Gipson. Former and current high school standouts Sam Wilhoite (Kalaheo), Ryan Hirata, Kyle Pape (Iolani), Jeremiah Ostrowski, Spencer McLachlin (Punahou) and Alex Patykula (Mililani) are also participants.

All games are played at Manoa Recreational Gym. Games tomorrow tip-off at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.


Wie, Hamilton nominated

Golfer Michelle Wie and surfer Bethany Hamilton, both of Hawai'i, are among the nominees for the ESPY awards.

Wie is in two categories: Best Breakthrough Athlete and Best Female Golfer. Hamilton is in the Best Comeback category.

The winners will be selected by fans via ESPN.com. Polls close July 9 and the winners will be announced at the ESPY Awards on ESPN on July 18.
