Kono, Wie, Wise advance in Publinx

Hawai'i golfers Stephanie Kono, defending champion Michelle Wie and Lehua Wise today advanced to tomorrow's first round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club at Williamsburg, Va.

Brittany Lang, 18, of McKinney, Texas, was the medalist after the second round of stroke play, shooting a 7-under 65 today for a 135 total. The top 64 players out of a field of 144 advanced to match play.

Kono, 14, of Honolulu, shot a 2-under 70 and was fourth at 139. Wie, 14, of Honolulu, shot a 71 and was tied for sixth at 141. Wie and Kono are Punahou School students. Wise of Lihu'e, Kauai, finished tied for 43rd at 148 after a 75 today. Wise recently completed her freshman year at New Mexico State.

Other Hawai'i golfers who failed to advance were Amanda Wilson (72-150), Whitney Ueno (77-152), Miki Ueoka (73-153), Kelli Nakano (81-164), Rose Pagan (87-172).

The tournament concludes Sunday with a 36-hole final.

Last year, Wie became the youngest player to win an adult USGA championship at age 13, beating Virada Nirapathpongporn in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links.
