Former UH star Collins named coach at Cornell

Advertiser Staff

Former Olympian and University of Hawai'i All-American Deitre Collins was named head women's volleyball coach at Cornell earlier this month.

Collins
Collins is the eighth head coach in Cornell's history, and the second since the position was endowed as the Wendy Schaenen '79 Head Coach of Volleyball.

As an Ivy League school, Cornell does not offer athletic scholarships. Big Red, located in Ithaca, N.Y., finished second in the conference last season.

Collins was the starting middle blocker for the 1988 Olympic team in Seoul, and an alternate on the 1992 team. She was an All-American at Manoa in 1981, '82 and '83. The Rainbow Wahine won the NCAA Championship those final two years.

Collins earned the Broderick Award, given to the sport's finest collegiate player, in 1982 and '83. She was named Broderick Cup winner for the 1983-84 year, becoming the first volleyball player honored as the country's finest collegiate athlete.

For the past eight seasons, Collins coached UNLV. She re-started the program and went 89-136, earning Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1998, when the Rebels went 23-8.

UNLV players posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or better all eight seasons, and had a record 10 academic all-conference selections in 2002.

Collins graduated from Hawai'i in 1985 with a degree in broadcast communications. She will return next month for a series of volleyball camps.

The Setter-Hitter Camp is July 22 to 25 at Campbell High. The Volleyball Camp with Champions will be July 29 to Aug. 1 at Waipahu High and the Waipahu Rec Center.

Joy McKienzie, an All-America setter for Long Beach State, is also on the camp staff, along with former Rainbows Eyal Zimet and Dejan Miladinovic.

Both camps are open to boys and girls in grades 7 to 12. Cost is $165 for the Setter-Hitter Camp (18 hours of instruction in six sessions) and $185 for the Champions Camp (11 sessions, 30 hours). Enrollment in both camps is $325.

There will be two sessions at King Intermediate in Kane'ohe, July 8 and 9, and 12 and 13. The final session is July 19 to 21 at Seabury Hall on Maui.

Each session costs $100. For more information, call 236-2393, ext. 619, or email allen2x@hotmail.com.
