Grandson, 20, charged in attackRobert T. Street, 20, was arraigned today in District Court on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.
Street, who was charged yesterday when he was discharged from Tripler Army Medical Center's psychiatric ward, is accused of choking and trying to smother his bedridden 87-year-old grandfather Saturday.
The victim was treated Saturday at St. Francis Medical Center-West and released. The suspect's grandmother witnessed the incident, police said.
Street is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Man, 23, arrested in sex assault
A 23-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy in a restroom on Bishop Street. The man was booked on first-degree sex assault.
Bank robbery suspect charged
Ryan Gary Piiohia, 37, was charged yesterday in a federal complaint with the June 14 robbery of Central Pacific Bank's Mo'ili'ili branch.
Piiohia, who has 43 prior convictions, is also under federal investigation in three other bank robberies: at Hawaii National Bank's Kailua branch on Monday, City Bank in Kane'ohe on June 1 and American Savings Bank in Kalihi on May 26.
3 armed robberies being investigated
Police are investigating three armed robberies that occurred in a 19-hour period yesterday involving several men carrying knives and guns.
A 47-year-old man told police three men, one of them with a gun, accosted and beat him at 12:25 a.m. Monday in the parking lot of the Waikiki Shell and took his wallet.
At 12:30 a.m. yesterday, two 19-year-old men reported being robbed of cash at Makaloa and Ke'eaumoku streets by four men. One of the robbers had a gun and another a butterfly knife, police said.
The third incident involved two Kalihi boys, ages 16 and 17, who were robbed yesterday at 6:45 p.m. at Bishop Street and Ala Moana by two men. The older victim was cut by a knife and the younger boy was punched, police said.
No arrests have been made. Police said they do not know if the robberies are connected.
Missing woman found at IHS
A missing Waipahu woman was found yesterday at the Institute for Human Services.
Kimberly "Desiree" Marshall, who requires daily medication, had become disoriented late Monday near the Pagoda Hotel after a dinner with her father and wandered around until someone directed her to IHS, police said.
Marshall was examined at The Queen's Medical Center yesterday and sent home, police said.
Ma'ili home, car damaged in fire
A father and his young son escaped uninjured early today from their burning house at 87-237 Ho'okele Street in Ma'ili.
The 1:44 a.m. fire gutted the single-story home and destroyed the family car.
Stranded hikers get back safely
Three stranded hikers were brought out safely last night from the top of Waimano Home Road by fire rescue specialists.
Two men and a woman had been reported missing about 8 p.m. They used a camera flash to alert rescuers in a helicopter to their position, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada said.
The uninjured hikers were brought out at 10 p.m., said Tejada.
