Advertiser Staff

More than 8,000 letter carriers will head to the Islands next month for their biennial AFL-CIO convention, officials said yesterday.

The National Association of Letter Carriers said its five-day convention will start July 19 at the Hawaii Convention Center. Scheduled speakers include U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii. The union counts active and retired U.S. Postal Service carriers among its more than 300,000 members nationwide.

L&L to open Hickam outlet

L&L Drive-Inn is scheduled to open a new restaurant near the Hickam Air Force Base par-3 golf course today, keeping the plate lunch pioneer on track to meet its goal of adding 52 new outlets in Hawai'i and the Mainland this year.

California has been one of the Hawai'i-based chain's fastest growing Mainland markets, with 10 new restaurants opened this month alone. Other L&L locations planned for opening by summer's end include New York, Colorado and Utah.

Code sharing review sought

Pacific Wings yesterday asked the U.S. Department of Justice to review code sharing agreements between Hawaiian Airlines, Aloha Airlines and former Aloha subsidiary Island Air.

Officials with Maui-based Pacific Wings said the agreements are anti-competitive and will give its three competitive airlines "market domination and control that would otherwise be prohibited."

Code sharing is a commercial agreement between two airlines that allows an airline to put its two-letter identification code on the flights of another airline as they appear in computerized reservations systems.
