Ailing dog returned to owners

By Robbie Dingeman

Little lost Zeus turned out to be a lucky dog after all.

Eliciya Walters, 8, returned 14-week-old Zeus, who she had renamed Lucky, to his owners — after a big hug, of course.

The 14-week-old Jack Russell terrier was reunited yesterday with his relieved owners, Michelle and Jason Hanley of Kane'ohe, after the family who had taken him in Sunday read his story in The Advertiser and realized they had the missing pup.

Annie Borden, of Wahiawa, said her 8-year-old granddaughter Eliciya Walters received the dog Sunday afternoon from a woman in the parking lot of the Hawaiian Humane Society.

The Hanleys had lost Zeus that morning while visiting friends at the Aliamanu Military Reservation. They were especially worried because the puppy has a life-threatening heart murmur and needs surgery that's likely to cost about $3,000.

Michelle Hanley, 21, said she was thrilled to find Zeus safe and healthy and was "happily surprised" when Borden called to say they had the dog.

"I was very thankful that they had read the newspaper and that everyone has made such a big effort for us," she said.

Hanley said she appreciates the kindness and generosity of Eliciya in giving up the friendly little dog she had named Lucky.

"She did a good deed," Hanley said. "We hope that she gets another puppy."

The Hawaiian Humane Society has offered to help Eliciya find another puppy.

Her grandmother said the third-grader-to-be knows she did the right thing and hopes to find a little dog she can keep soon.

"In the end, I think she'll be happy," Borden said.
