GOLF BRIEFS
Ginoza now head pro at Waikoloa Kings'

Advertiser Staff

Kevin Hayashi, who played with Michelle Wie in the 2004 Sony Open in Hawai'i, isn't the only "Uncle Kevin" in local golf.

Hundreds of junior golfers on the Big Island also call Kevin Ginoza by that endearing term for his help in promoting their game by initiating the Waikoloa junior golf program.

Now he can help the adults as well.

Ginoza, an assistant pro at the Waikoloa Resort's Beach Course since graduating from University of Hawai'i-Hilo in 1998, was named head golf professional at the Kings' Course.

"I'm truly humbled by this promotion. When I was a kid, I never dreamed such a rewarding career was within my grasp," said the 'Aiea High graduate, who began playing with the O'ahu Junior Golf Association at age 10. "I hope my success can be an inspiration to the kids that if you set high goals and work hard to achieve them, your future is unlimited."

"Kevin is an outstanding golfer, an excellent teacher, and a great operations man," said David Pritchett, Waikoloa's director of golf. "We're proud of what he's accomplished for Waikoloa, and for junior golf on the Big Island, and are confident that he'll do a great job."

Hayashi, Lynch at PGA qualifier

Hilo's Kevin Hayashi and Kane'ohe's John Lynch represent the Aloha Section at the 37th PGA Club Professional Championship, which started this morning at Longaberger Golf Course in Nashton, Ohio.

All four rounds will be shown on The Golf Channel. Re-broadcasts run into next week.

Hayashi is a pro at Mauna Kea and past Aloha Section Player of the Year. Lynch is Director of Instruction at Ko'olau Golf Club.

The CPC purse is $450,000. The top 25 earn invitations to the PGA Championship.

Manoa Cup show to be on OC16

A 30-minute feature on the 96th Manoa Cup, produced by 808Golf TV, will be broadcast Saturday, at 6 p.m., on OC16.

Ryan Perez, a Moanalua graduate heading to the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, won the state amateur match-play title, defeating Shannon Tanoue in the final at Oahu Country Club.

The show includes action footage, interviews, a golf tip by Matt Hall of Turtle Bay Resort and a technical tip by OCC pro Andrew Feldmann and Manoa Cup tournament director Jay Hinazumi.

Puakea to hold birthday bash

Puakea Golf Course will celebrate the first anniversary of its completion next month.

Hawai'i's newest 18-hole facility will have a cake presentation by cable television host Dickie Chang on July 1. The highlight of the celebration will be a "Family Fun Day" on July 16. The event will include a moon bounce, hot dogs, soda, specials on draft beer and long drive and putting contests.

From July 1 to 15, Puakea will have a 4-for-3 special, with the free round awarded to the golfer who wins a closest-to-the-hole contest.
