Pair nabbed in home burglaries

Two Makaha men were arrested early yesterday on suspicion of burglarizing homes in the 3000 block of Diamond Head Road.

Police responding to a burglary-in-progress complaint shortly before 6 a.m. arrested the men, ages 27 and 31, after they were in a scuffle with a 40-year-old man, who discovered them hiding in his bathroom. One of the suspects dove through a window and was arrested outside the residence while the second suspect was detained in the house by the resident.

Four homes on the block were burglarized, police said.

Both suspects were booked on first-degree burglary and drug possession. The 27-year-old man was also booked on possession of burglary tools.

Man charged in attack on girl

A 20-year-old Kapalama man was charged yesterday on two counts of first-degree sex assault involving a 14-year-old girl. Kevin Kenichi Diaz is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail. The alleged assault occurred April 7 in Waipahu.

2 charged with street racing

Two men were charged yesterday with street racing.

Ross T. Mukai, 18, of Manoa and Shaun L. Peck, 18, of Hawai'i Kai were allegedly seen racing on Kalaniana'ole Highway at 11:25 p.m. by two traffic enforcement officers, said traffic Lt. Ron Bode.

Mukai and Peck came out of Koko Marina Center and were clocked by an officer at 70 mph, Bode said. They were stopped at Keahole Street.

Mukai was released on $100 bail and will be arraigned Tuesday at District Court. Peck was scheduled to be arraigned today.

Maui boy, 3, dies in auto accident

WAILUKU, Maui — A 3-year-old boy died after he was injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident in the back yard of his Kahakuloa home Tuesday, police said yesterday.

The child, Jrew Viela, was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center after the 5 p.m. accident.

The boy was riding with his father and 6-year-old cousin when the ATV overturned, police said. The 6-year-old boy was treated for minor injuries.
