WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Only defending champion Michelle Wie is left standing from all the Hawai'i participants in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.

Wie advanced to tomorrow's quarterfinals by beating Melissa Martin of Altadena, Calif., 3 and 1, this morning and Jane Park of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., 2 and 1, in the afternoon.

Wie will face Jenna Pearson of Wheaton, Ill., who beat Elena Kurokawa of Redondo Beach, Calif., 2 and 1, in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, Stephanie Kono, 14, of Honolulu lost to Hannah Jun of San Diego, 2 and 1, and Lihu'e's Lehua Wise, 18, lost to In-Bee Park of Eustis, Fla., 4 and 3.

Wie, Kono and Wise were the only three among eight Hawai'i entries to advance to match play.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played tomorrow and a 36-hole final will be played Sunday.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Jun, Park, stroke-play medalist Brittany Lang of McKinney, Texas, Nara Shin of Chula Vista, Calif., and Angela Park of Torrance, Calif. Ya-Ni Tseng of Chinese Taipei and Ashley Grier of Hagerstown, Md., were tied after 20 holes when their round of 16 match was suspended at 8:15 p.m. Eastern time.

Wie, who has battled an uncooperative putter all week here, seemed to have put it all together at the start of her round-of-32 match today against Martin. She rolled in a 16-foot birdie putt on the first hole and a 5-footer for birdie on the second to go 2-up.

But when she started needing two putts on every green, Martin took advantage with one-putt birdies on three of the next five holes.

Wie tied it with a 2-footer on No. 8 after a dazzling shot from rough about 50 yards out, went ahead with a 9-foot putt on No. 13 after outdriving Martin by 70 yards on the 345-yard par 4, then doubled her advantage at the par-5 15th after hitting her chip to about 30 inches.

"I was proud of myself," Martin said. "I knew she wouldn't give me too many, and she didn't, and that's the way a match should be."

At just 5-foot-3, Martin was almost dwarfed by the 6-foot Wie, but was thrilled to learn when she arrived today that they had been paired.

"David and Goliath," she said, laughing.

In the round-of-16, Wie and Park were tied when Wie bogeyed the par-4 13th hole. Wie regained the lead with a birdie on the par-4 14th. She went 2-up with a birdie on the par-3 17th hole.

Last year, Wie, then 13, became the youngest to win an adult USGA championship when won this event in Palm Coast, Fla.
