This is the weekend foodies have been waiting for: The Taste of Honolulu, a benefit for Easter Seals Hawai'i, is a gorge fest of food — wonderful food — on the Civic Center grounds beginning today.

Also on the menu: wine booths, chef demonstrations, kids activities and entertainment. There'll be a lot of people there, too, oohing and ahhing, checking out each other's food and wondering where to spend their scrip. Don't be shy: Ask your fellow foodies where they got that entrée or dessert, and don't be surprised if you're asked, too.

A few other tips:

  • Want to avoid the crowds? It's generally less-crowded in the daytime, but that also means warmer weather. It's likely to be quite busy tonight as pau-hana crowds gather from downtown.
  • Bring a portable chair. Yes, it's bulky, but it beats sitting on the grass, or standing.
  • Watch where you're walking. The lawn of the Civic Center is a lovely setting for the Taste, but those trees have roots that could trip you up. You won't want to drop your plates of goodies.
