Hula competition celebrates Kamehameha

The 2004 King Kamehameha celebration continues this weekend with the 31st annual King Kamehameha Hula Competition at the Blaisdell Arena. Carrying on the theme of "Na Mo'olelo O Kamehameha I" (Legends of Kamehameha the Great), the international hula competition features halau from Hawai'i, Japan and the Mainland. Both contemporary and traditional hula styles will be featured, and patrons can shop for lei, souvenir T-shirts, CDs and He Mele Aloha songbooks, too. The competition kicks off at 6 p.m. today and concludes at 1 p.m. Saturday with the winners of the two-day event announced and the Award of Distinction given to a community leader. Makana at Hard Rock Cafe

Slack-key virtuoso Makana heads home after a "Curbside Prophets" Mainland tour for one summer show only tonight at Hard Rock Cafe. The free "Return to the Rock" party, which takes place 6-9 p.m., features music from all three of his CDs plus a sneak peek of songs from his upcoming album. There will also be other musical guests, a "Return to the Rock" trivia contest and prizes. After the party, Makana goes back on tour and heads for Japan, China, Europe and the Mainland. 955-7383.


Farm Fair heads for Kualoa Ranch

Get ready, Hawai'i, for the first-ever Hawaii 4-H Farm Fair starting Thursday at Kualoa Ranch and continuing through the Fourth of July weekend. Here's the schedule: swine and beef shows, 9:30 a.m. Thursday; lamb and dairy shows, 1 p.m. Thursday; swine and beef showmanship, 9:30 a.m. July 2; lamb and dairy showmanship, 1 p.m. July 2. Starting at 1 p.m. July 3, there's an auction for dairy, beef, swine and lamb, respectively. Other highlights of the fair include food booths, games, keiki bouncers, crafts, educational programs and 4-H hands-on learning experiences. Fair times are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. July 2-3 and noon-5 p.m. July 4. Admission and parking are free. 453-6050.


Stepping lively

Feel the rhythm of the beat during DeJaVu — Dancexperience 18 as 24-VII Danceforce teams up with the University of Hawai'i Warrior Dancers, Castle High School Danceforce and Punahou Dance. This concert features more than 150 dancers 6 and older performing in styles including contemporary jazz, lyrical, point, hip-hop and acrobatics. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Saturday and July 2-3 and 4 p.m. Sunday in the Ron Bright Theatre at Castle High School. Tickets are $10 if bought today or $15 from Saturday through the show run. 235-5141.


'Honk!' for the arts

Hawaii Education of the ARTS, a partner with the Kailua Church of the Nazarene, presents "Honk! Junior" at 1:30 and 6 p.m. today and Saturday. Pam DeBoard, director of HEARTS, said, "Our goal is to equip parents, children and youth in the arts." With a cast of 44 youngsters ranging in age from 6 to 13, this musical about the ugly duckling promises to be a delight. Members of the Honolulu Boy Choir also participate in the play, and the entire choir appears at 6 p.m. on opening night with songs and dance from their Memorial Day weekend tour of Washington, D.C. Shows take place in Windward Community College's Paliku Theatre. Tickets are $10 general and $5 students. 741-2787.

Hot stuff at the Salsa-Thon

It's a day of fun for all when the 4th annual Salsa-Thon dances on from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. In honor of El Dia de San Juan (a celebration of St. John the Baptist), this Puerto Rican cultural and salsa festival features Latin and local food, silent auction, party jumpers, face painting, arts and crafts, product booths and salsa dance workshops. Start dancing to Latin music by Batacumbe, El Conjunto Tropical, Son Caribe, Wally Rita and his Latin Amigos. There'll be performances by dance studios Aloha Rumberos, Dance Mix, Hot Salsa Dancing Hawaii, Salsa Extreme, Dream to Dance and Silver Salsa Steppers. And salsa DJs Ray Cruz of Sabor Tropical, Rod El Moreno de la Salsa, Alberto, Rodney Perez and Latin Lady DJ Margarita will keep your hips swaying. No outside food or coolers are allowed at this event, which takes place in the McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Park . Tickets are $5 advance and $10 at the door. 941-5216, 285-0072.


A fair for the little ones

Keiki are encouraged to come out for the Kahala Mall's 8th annual Keiki Fair, a benefit for Read to Me International Foundation. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, kids of all ages can enjoy games, prizes and musical entertainment. Fire magician Carlos da Silva II, above, makes another hot appearance during "Summer Magic." Admission to the fair is free, and $1 scrips will be available to play selected games and activities. 732-7736, ext. 13.


Dressed for the occasion

It's time to glam out as the 21st annual Universal ShowQueen Pageant gets under way. Billing itself as "the ultimate in the art of female impersonation," this lavish and remarkable event honors the talents of contestants from the Mainland, Australia, Hawai'i and Asia. Competition categories include couture cocktail, evening gown, talent extravaganza and Las Vegas ShowGirl costume. Doors open at 6 p.m. Saturday for no-host cocktails, with showtime at 7:30 in the Pacific Ballroom at the Ilikai Hotel. Tickets are $35 — call Diamond Head Video at 735-6066 for availability; some may also be sold at the door. Zia de'Zaneiro, right, 2003 Universal ShowQueen, will be at Saturday's event.


Hapa-haole concert a benefit

Noenoelani Zuttermeister and her hula halau present "Under a Tropic Moon: 100 Years of Hapa Haole Hula" in memory of former student Thomas Keola Ahsing. Loretta Ables Sayre and more than 100 dancers will take part in the show, which features hapa-haole songs and hula. Ahsing was a technical services representative with Island Ready-Mix Concrete; all concert proceeds will go toward creating an annual scholarship at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa College of Engineering in his memory. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Hawai'i Theatre. Tickets are $37 general and $32 seniors. 528-0506.


A la Fellini

ARTafterDARK returns this month with Fellini Friday, from 5 to 9 tonight at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Fans of acclaimed writer-director Federico Fellini are encouraged to dress up in black/white attire for this event or even don costumes inspired by his films. Check out new Ferraris, taste Italian food, participate in wine tasting or enjoy entertainment by band Bossa Nova or the interactive Tangentz dance troupe. All galleries will be open for this event, and the Doris Duke Theatre hosts a screening of "Fellini: I'm a Born Liar" at 7:30 p.m. for $3.
